Why “Connection Services”?

It’s a funny name—not especially catchy. I admit, I think it mostly came about because several years ago, when the idea took shape, we sang the lyrics of OneRepublic’s “Connection” around the house as a joke. Whenever we needed someone else in some way, we’d start singing the song. The word must have stuck.

In the wake of Covid and the demise of my previous home-based creative business, I started writing fanfiction. The house felt cramped with everyone at home, but I still wanted to create in some way. Writing is incredibly complicated and simple at the same time. The simple part is that it takes very little space or tools—a single laptop will do.

I wrote a fanfiction with Connection Services first. It’s still out there—it’s based on a fantasy series. I didn’t like how the series ended, and I used the idea of Connection Services to bring two characters back together in a modern setting. The experience was fun. Although my fanfiction didn’t blow up, there was a core set of readers who followed along and interacted.

The transition from writing fanfiction to my own original stories was rough. I realized quickly that I am not a strict outliner, but that it’s very important for me to dig deep into who my characters are first. I struggled through The Beta Test for around two and a half years, on and off, until it started to turn into something I felt I could publish.

I’ve already written book two before book one is officially released. There are currently plans for one or two more books in the series, but it’s open to changes.
